Operation Hydration is the brain child of a group of student athletes who care about the wellness of all of the students at our school. Many of our coaches recommend that their athletes drink water throughout the day, and our athletes realize that this practice is good for everyone.
Imagine sitting in a high school classroom on a 90 degree day while sweat drips down your back. Imagine reaching for your water bottle, your tongue craving a drop of refreshing relief. Oh, no! Your water bottle is empty, and the only water bottle filling station is down two flights of stairs, across Student Street, and behind the gymnasium. That’s quite a trek for the 4-minute passing time we have between classes.
These student athletes plan to “advertise” the bottle filling station and create informative posters to hang around the building. These posters will make sure students and faculty members are aware of the many health benefits of staying hydrated by drinking water. They also plan to use this bottle filling station as an opportunity to discuss the overabundance of trash in our local landfills. Using refillable water bottles will help reduce pollution. I have no doubt that the acquisition of a bottle filling station will foster the teamwork skills these students already possess. They will work cooperatively to create and hang the posters, and they will also discuss the importance of reusable water bottles with their teammates.
In Their Own Words
We need one bottle filler station to encourage people to use water bottles instead of buying more plastic. A new water fountain for our second floor will better our school because less time will be spent out of class to go to the first floor by our gym where we have one of these water fountains. Behind the gym is an inconvenient location for students and teachers. By giving students easy access to a built in bottle filler we are encouraging students to help our environment.
My classmates and I plan to take ownership of the new second floor water bottle filling station. We will make sure that it is clean and working properly. If it is in need of anything like a filter change we will let the maintenance department know about it.
If we are able to get a new water fountain our whole student body would benefit. For example, students will be able to stay in class instead of leaving class to get a drink every time they are thirsty. They will be able to have a of bottle water with them and fill it up when needed. Also, more people will drink water because they will have more access to it. This water fountain will also aid our environment because kids and teachers will be able to refill their own reusable water bottles.
