This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Sometimes you don't really get to know who you are until you play a character on stage or sing a song. Sometimes standing in the spotlight helps you find direction and purpose. Sometimes what we really need is curtain calls and applause.
My school is a place filled with students who have stories to tell but need a more creative outlet than story and essay writing.
They need a chance to sing, dance or act in order to release the frustrations, anxiety and confusions of the day. Three years ago, when I first started in the school there was no music or arts program in existence during or after school. Despite this sad reality, the halls were flooded with singing, rapping, spoken words, and dancing. Sometimes it wouldn't stop once the students entered the classrooms and frequently caused disruptions in the more academic subject areas. Last year, we took these "difficult" students and formed an Improv Comedy Troupe and a small theater department that mounted a successful spring musical. The same students who couldn't focus and constantly got in trouble were now taking center stage and being praised for the same things they used to get reprimanded for. These students gained discipline, focus, purpose and confidence.
My Project
Mounting a show in our school is difficult. It is like trying to cook a gourmet meal without any pots and pans. We have the ingredients but we have no sound system, scenery, or microphones. Last year's shows were successful in terms of teaching students the discipline and focus required to launch a show on stage and backstage. While our resources were limited, we did what we could and we filled the auditorium. The audience loved the energy and professionalism of the students but repeatedly said that they could not fully hear what was going on on stage. That made them so sad to know that there were some in the audience that didn't hear their singing voices or the punchlines of their jokes. These microphones will fix that problem and allow us to reach out to a broader audience and recruit more students to join us, so they too could gain the confidence and presence that last year's students did.
The arts saves some student's high school experiences, I know it did for me, and now I'm seeing the same result in my students.
Students have changed from shy to outgoing, angry to friendly, failing to passing, lost to found. Some students may end up performing for their rest of their lives, most won't. However, I truly believe that all of these students will remember their time together on and off stage and retain the communication, social and academic skills they gained for a lifetime.
