My Project

We have more students than ever whose independent reading skills are multiple years below their grade-level instruction, a problem that was magnified by the impact of COVID-19. The C-Pen devices allow them to access books and handouts with their peers in their general education classrooms.

We are trialing C-Pens through an assistive technology loan program, and my students have discovered that the world of information and imagination they thought they could not access can be theirs.

When they discover that the world of books and reading can be theirs they light up and seek out reading on their own.

A fifth-grader, reading a historical "choose your own adventure" book about the Great Depression, looked up from reading and said, "This is heaven.” A 7th grader, after trialing the device said, "I need this" and read an article about plastic micro pollution in the ocean for half an hour with rapt attention and focus. Another 5th grader came in from their ELA class and said, "Can I borrow the C-Pen? It's silent reading time in class.” Previously this student would not have been able to participate in silent reading.

While we continue to mitigate the gap between independent reading skills and the demands of their general education curriculums, these devices support their access to developmentally appropriate content and being fully engaged members of their general education classroom communities. We have these loaned devices for one month. Every day students are seeking out these tools and the light in their eyes and their joy in seeing that the world of information, imagination, and learning is theirs is everything. Please support us in bridging the gap between current skill levels and educational inclusion; their smiles and energy when they are reading with the C-Pen light up a room.
