Opening New Chapters: a Diverse Library for Curious Second Graders

Help me give my students the opportunity to read new books.

My Project

Every day, my second-grade students walk into our classroom ready to learn, wonder, and grow. But when they go to our classroom library, they're often greeted by torn covers, outdated facts, and characters that no longer reflect their world. Our library needs a refresh—and with your help, we can bring it back to life.

I'm requesting a vibrant collection of new, diverse books that will spark a love of reading in every child.

From page-turning fiction to awe-inspiring biographies, these books will allow students to see themselves—and others—in powerful, positive ways. Stories featuring protagonists from different cultures, backgrounds, and abilities will open hearts and minds, while fresh nonfiction will challenge their thinking and stir their creativity.

We need books across three key genres:

Fiction to build imagination, empathy, and fluency

Non-fiction to feed their curiosity about science, animals, and the world

Biographies to inspire perseverance through real-life role models

Many of our books were printed before my students were born. They don’t reflect today’s diverse voices or align with current learning goals. This project allows students to access relevant texts that match their reading levels and interests.

Imagine a student who once struggled to connect with books lighting up as she reads Hair Love or The Proudest Blue. Picture a reluctant reader captivated by National Geographic Kids or Who Would Win? animal fact books, eagerly sharing facts with classmates.

Books are more than paper—they're passports to new ideas and doorways to self-discovery. Your support will put meaningful, engaging literature into the hands of children just beginning their independent reading journeys. With the right books, we can nurture confident, compassionate readers who see reading not just as a skill but as a joy.

Thank you for helping us turn the page toward a brighter, more inclusive future.
