My Project

My students come from a low socio-economic background, and many of them do not have access to books at home. With 64% of my class identifying as Native American, it is incredibly important to provide reading materials that reflect their culture and interests while also supporting their academic growth. Our state test scores in reading have consistently been low, which makes building strong literacy habits even more critical. These books will help me continue to create a warm, print-rich environment where reading is celebrated and encouraged.

My classroom library is a special space—students gather on the carpet to listen to read-alouds, complete their assignments nearby, and dive into independent reading time with enthusiasm.

Each book is carefully selected with my students in mind, based on what I’ve observed they enjoy and what they’ve told me they’re curious about. Having access to high-interest, level-appropriate books will allow them to read independently, grow in confidence, and fall in love with reading. This project will not only provide them with the resources they lack at home but also help close the literacy gap and build a lifelong love of learning.
