Help me give my students a sense of independence and accomplishment to complete assignments and tasks by providing Fire 7 tablets with apps addressing core competency (communication, social skills and emotional regulation) and educational needs.
Independence is what we all ultimately seek. My students are no different, except that most of them have to work harder to achieve this goal. I have a high energy classroom of fourth and fifth grade students with severe disabilities, including developmental, mental, physical and Autism Spectrum Disorders. These students work hard to stay on top of academic goals, communication needs, social skills, and emotional regulation. I love the drive to succeed that accompanies them to school each day. They expect to learn and grow daily with the proper motivation to help them through a variety of tasks and seemingly difficult challenges.
My students are truly a fun and, at the same time, challenging group of humans to work along side.
I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with these students and their parents every day that I teach. Their individual needs, of which there are many, require that I stay on top of ways to motivate and engage their minds. These students, all of which have such special gifts, deserve the opportunity to be challenged to grow and learn and become the individuals they were meant to become.
My Project
Introducing tablets into our classroom will help my students become more excited, motivated and focused . This focus, will help them stay on task, improve knowledge and performance, and ultimately complete their assignments. Students will use apps to gain skills and knowledge in communication, social and emotional regulation, and academic subjects such as language arts, the sciences and mathematics.
These tablets and their apps will open a world of possibilities for students with intellectual disabilities.
Tablets offer bright pictures for students with visual difficulties. Simple navigation and light weight tablets with touch screens are easier to use than a mouse and keyboard. Text to speech features, pictures to communicate and expressions of ideas on a variety of apps make daily lessons more accessible for students with challenging needs. Additionally, all these accommodations help my students not only be more successful in the classroom, but will also help them to be more independent as typical pen to paper curriculum requires a great deal of teacher assistance. The ease of tablets allow my students to work independently. More independence will lead to more confidence, which will ultimately lead to more successful learning. The addition of tablets into my classroom will ultimately lead to more successful students.
