Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Music Heals & Empowers! This has been the experience of many students during the 14 years that this program has been active.
With classes based on a direct experience of music, our kids have discovered, not only the JOY of making music, but the ability of developing RESILIENCY THROUGH MUSIC.
The majority of my students come from Latino families that have immigrated to the US to provide a better life for them. These kids are probably not very different from the ones that attend other schools in the vicinity. Their families have stories of struggle, fueled with their imperious desire to improve and the parent's hope that the students can receive a good education that lifts them out of poverty.
You can find stories like this one all around this site but, for me, these are the faces and stories that have touched my life as a teacher. I have seen how many of them, through music, have felt fulfillment and enjoyed sense of belonging. I have tried to instill them sense of pride and sense of empowerment, the belief that if they are persistent and focused, they will achieve whatever goals they envision!
My Project
My MUSIC classes have always had an interdisciplinary approach in which music is always presented in relation to other disciplines: visual arts, media arts and other subjects (such as History, Geography, Math or Science). I always want my students to understand the contexts in which different music has been created, I also want them to reflect on the purpose of the music and I want them not only to comprehend, but to experience how music is one of the most powerful tools that the we, humans, have have to express ourselves.
In my classes my students learn music, but more importantly they get to UNDERSTAND THE WORLD THROUGH MUSIC.
At the present moment, music experiences are constantly presented with the support of film, illustrations and other media arts. It is unconceivable, these days, to go to a concert or to present a new musical work without images that support them.
With this 75" TV I have the vision of opening a BIG WINDOW to the WORLD and SPARKLING their imagination and their passion for learning. My experience is that students get powerfully, hypnotically engaged if you present visually appealing content and this TV would help me to provide to my students with aesthetic experiences that they might lack in their daily lives.
I am sure that that this TV would have a POWERFUL IMPACT in our classes, specially after all these long months of pandemic suffering. This TV would be a tool for me to continue offering inspiring experiences to my students at a time that they need them more than ever!!!
Would you help me OPEN this WINDOW for them...? We would be very thankful if you could help us to make this dream come true!!!
