My Project

I teach at a school where 100% of my children receive free breakfast and lunch. We serve a very diverse population of around 400 students. Many of my students do not have access to the public library or many of their own books that they can read at home. Our school library is their main source for the books they read.

Do you remember when you were young and going to the library to check out a book?

Do you remember the excitement of getting to bring that new book home to read to your parents? I am trying to create that atmosphere in our school library. One of the ways I do that is through our after-school book club, the Elementary Battle of the Books.

Each year, our fourth and fifth graders participate in the Battle of the Books. This involves reading fifteen chapter books. Seven of our books this year are new books that have not been done before. However, with funding being cut, we are only able to get a handful of each of the new books. In the past, our school system purchased a class set., This makes it possible for the students to read along with their teacher during their read-aloud time. I would like to purchase more copies of each of the new books.

Students are so excited to come to the library to check out our EBOB books. They come to the library as soon as they get off the bus and are in the library right before the bell rings. They love to come see me in the library and discuss their latest book. By purchasing these new books, you would help continue to help students foster a love for reading and help make them lifelong learners.
