Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 31 incredible 5th graders in a high poverty school in California. My students face numerous challenges, but they come to school every day ready to learn and do their best!

My students are so bright, but they are often not exposed to current events or the world around them. I want my students to be citizens of the world, so I often try to supplement our curriculum with newspaper or internet articles. However, I often have a difficult time finding grade-level appropriate current events and my school doesn’t have the resources to order subscriptions to children’s publications.

Subscriptions to Weekly Reader and Time for Kids will expose my kids to current events in a format they can access and will find engaging. We will use both for weekly mini-lessons on current events and my students will also be able to read them during our daily independent reading. The value of these publications goes even beyond these uses though---I hope to also use the materials as launching pads for our research writing project, our nonfiction unit, and various literacy activities throughout the year.

Thank you so much for your consideration. Your help will open up the world for my students!
