My students need supplies to encourage motivation in writing. A variety of materials like markers, pencils, paper and a sharpener will help them to get excited!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 5th grade English Language Arts in the Bronx, New York. I have such a passion and love for reading and writing. I wish nothing more than to show my students how reading and writing can bring them on adventures they never dreamed possible. My goal is to develop Readers and Writers.
My students are wonderful kids that are vastly under served.
Many of them rely on the commitment of their teachers and other community members to provide them with a higher quality of life and education. All students receive free lunch and breakfast, and many of them live in temporary housing. A number of them have hardened themselves due to their circumstances and their neighborhood environment teaches them that school is not a priority. Despite the socioeconomic challenges they face in their young lives, I can see they have so much potential and are just waiting to be hooked. Overall, students in my school performed at 14% proficiency in state tests for 2015. We are provided very few resources to help boost our students' interests and motivate them. They are given little time to create and use their imaginations. It's time to tap into their minds and unlock the greatness that lies within them.
My Project
In our classroom, any writing and reading supplies are hard to come by. The students, although they have very little means, have done what they can to help supply the room with needed materials that are not provided by the school. As we have worked this year, many of these supplies have dwindled. In addition, they are much-needed tools have not grasped the attention of the student body.
Providing students with a seemingly limitless supply of paper and interesting writing tools will, I hope, spark in them a new-found interest in writing and reading. They gravitate toward anything "special" whether it is a mechanical pencil or a highlighter. In today's world of high-tech gadgets that many of our suburban counterparts take for granted, my students would be happy to have a brightly colored pen or marker to decorate their writing and give it their unique touch. They will finish the year writing memoirs that are as special as they are!
The donations from this project will make our classroom a place where students look forward to their writing work each day.
Instead of sighing out of boredom and frustration, they will get excited to write their personal stories with interesting tools that go beyond just plain paper and pencils. They will find that the right tools can inspire a passion to reach higher. Writers have unique views of the world my kids deserve for theirs to be heard.
