Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a diverse group of 19 Kindergarten students. They are a very enthusiastic bunch and so excited to learn! I work in a low-income school and half of my students are Spanish speakers with a varying degree of English. The transition to long-distance learning at the end of the 2020 went well with my class. Half the time they were dragged out of bed or actually in bed when they joined me for live classes. One day one of my students that was lying in bed in his pajamas and said, “Miss, I like having school in my bed with my pajamas on.” It was adorable. My heart felt for another student that did not have one book in his home to read. I do not know what the 2020/2021 school year will look like but I hope that we will be back in the classroom for the entire year. As of now, we are scheduled to start on time with face-to-face learning.
The classroom environment is so important for these young learners.
It is their first experience with school and it is my job to provide the proper guidance and support to build a foundation for their education.
My Project
I believe playtime is very important for Kindergarten students. They love math manipulatives! They are happy with basic building blocks but I know they will love the magnetic tiles and puzzle shapes to make inspiring structures. If they dream it, they can make it!
I want stimulating books that will peak their imagination in the classroom as well.
That includes books for me to read aloud and books for students to read in the reading corner. I want to create lifelong readers and there is nothing like a good book!
