This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
75% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. 50% come from homes where English is not the primary language and approximately 30% are reading two years below grade level. Our students do not have home libraries.
The library had been closed for 11 years.
It is now cleaned, organized, and open. My goal is to create an inviting space so that students love coming here to explore their interests and develop a love for reading. A rug in the read-aloud space would make a special corner for little, emerging readers. Bookmarks are given with every checkout to encourage best book handling practices and as a “gift” from the library. Additionally, much of the collection was purged because books were dated and in poor condition. I have about 70 popular children's books that need library processing to be put into the collection so the students can have access to them. The library supplies (labels, protectors, markers, pens, and library pocket kit) would enable me to do that.
Because the school library experience is still very new, students have no idea of what book(s) to choose; the plate stands are used to prop books, on shelf tops in displays, to entice students to select a book and the acrylic sign holders hold signage that promotes different library themes throughout the year. The Swiffer is to keep library shelving and books free of dust.
