My Students

Do you like it when you never have a say in anything throughout your day? Well my students have a hard time doing their best if they don't have any control over their day. I want to give my students choices so that they learn how to monitor and take responsibility of their own learning.

My students are a wonderful group of second graders who love learning and are thriving through the use of Daily 5 and Cafe in my classroom.

Daily 5 gives students choices as to what activities they want to complete. They have to complete all the activities but they choose what order to complete them. I have found that by giving my students these choices they are more involved in their learning and they are excited about reading and improving themselves. I want to expand on this by giving them choices in their seating because not all of my students learn by sitting up straight in a chair all day. Some of them would rather stand, or sit on the floor so this will help give them options.

My Project

When you walk into my classroom you will see students reading in a variety of seating options including: bean bag chairs, stools, pillows and bungee chairs. You will also still rows of desks. I want to eliminate the monotony of sitting in rows and sitting in the same seat every day. My students currently have assigned desks where they keep their supplies and sit at different periods throughout the day. For some students this is difficult, they need more motion. They learn better in different ways. These materials are going to allow us to store our supplies near our closet using the crates and students will be able to choose to sit on the floor, work at standing desks, sit at tables, or sit in our other seating options with a clipboard in hand. Giving students these choices will make them feel at home in our class family and allow them to thrive each day they walk in our classroom.

Many of my students have difficult home lives and school is where they feel safe.

By giving them these options and helping to make our classroom feel like a home they will bond with each other and me. They will be able to have choices which empowers them to put their best effort forward each day. I have seen the power of choice do wonders and adding the choice of where and how to sit during learning will empower them even more.
