This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The solar system should be viewed as our backyard." -Neil deGrasse Tyson
My students are strong, hardworking, and kind souls who have overcome hard obstacles of diversity that slow their path to success.
Almost all the students in my classroom are English Language Learners and live in poverty. Many of them lack common experiences and understandings that other children have.
The school community that I work with tries its best to provide all students with the materials and experiences they need to be successful. Since funding is limited, there are many resources that could provide more effective learning, but there is no means to obtain them. Having more resources in the classroom will gift the students with a greater chance of achievement.
My Project
My students need posters, a motorized solar system, an inflatable solar system and bulletin board materials to build understanding of the solar system. Students will be able to have visual aids for their discovery and exploration of our solar system. Outer space is very complex, but with visual resources, I hope for my students to build their understanding. Since language barriers are an issue in my classroom, visual resources are yet another tool I can use to reach out to the students in need. The 3D representations will be placed around the room as a demonstration of planet alignment. Students will have opportunities to discuss the solar system using the posters, and 3D models. With these representations, students will have a clear model and understanding of the planets and how they interact.
Not only will this project give my students opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable, but it will also provide them with experiences that open their eyes up to the wonderful world around them and beyond.
These experiences may be what my students need to become lifelong learners on the path to success.
