My Students
My students are a colorful cast of kiddos from all around the world. They love to read and write and would benefit greatly from a field trip built around literacy.
My students are a mix of general education and special needs students snuggled tightly into our Chicago public school classroom.
My students this year are a particularly imaginative and creative bunch who love to listen to, tell and write stories with and for one another.
My Project
The Open Books Chicago field trip give students the chance to create their own work of creative writing, share their pieces with one another and have the stories bound in a book that they then get to keep as they move on to fourth grade. The skills they learn on this trip are invaluable and will stick with them through their elementary (and possibly secondary) school years.
With a new focus on non-fiction reading and writing, my students have less instructional time dedicated to the craft of fiction writing.
I feel that it is extremely important for them as students, and for us as a society, to foster a love and value of fiction writing.
