This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love science. They want to explore, investigate, experiment and invent, but they lack the financial resources at home and at school that provides beyond the basics.

Experiences, motivation, knowledge, and resources are very important for my students to break the cycle of poverty that is in their community.

My students and their families want them to do well in school, they just need opportunities. Help my students become future biologists, geologists, engineers, agriculturalists or whatever careers that interest them.

My diverse students are multilingual--English, Spanish, Mam, Qanjobal--and most come from working-class families. Many live with single parents, guardians, grandparents or in multi-household families. Regardless of their situation, their families say they want their kids to do better than they did.

My Project

Art is good for students' emotional and creative well-being. But it can be a logistical classroom nightmare for teachers without the appropriate equipment. This is where an easel and a drying rack can help so that students can take their painting outside.

Open-air painting is an opportunity for students to find inspiration and artistically represent their science observations skills.

It is also a soothing activity for my students who have experienced some type of trauma, such as death in the family or homelessness.

With an easel, my students would be able to conduct open-air painting activities in our patio area behind our class. For example, we have been documenting the phenological changes of a tree we adopted. Students would paint this tree throughout the seasons as they notice changes. With drying racks, students would be able to store their art work without a mess so that it could be displayed later in class.
