Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come into the classroom every day ready to learn and grow. They all look forward to becoming stronger readers, mathematicians, scientists, artists, etc.

My students come from very low-income immigrant families.

They all have the ability to learn, but start off their education with a lower vocabulary. They need to work harder to meet goals. From what I have noticed, they are very eager to learn and are very proud when they accomplish a task.

My school has the highest FARMS rate in our large county, meaning we are the most financially affected school. The school works hard to provide our students with not only the education they are obliged to get but also the social and emotional part that is often missing. The students enjoy coming to school because they know it is a safe, caring environment where many of their needs can be met.

My Project

Reading is an opportunity for students to get lost in a world that can be as similar or as different as their own. For them to know what sparks their interests, students need to be able to access a variety of genres, at reading levels that are a good fit for them.

Our reading nook will give students a space for reading, as well as a space for choice, independence, and responsibility.

Students will work together and be responsible for keeping books organized by levels and genres. The reading nook will have a variety of non-fiction and fiction books of different levels, so that no matter the reading level, the student will still have a number of books and themes to chose from. Books for the reading nook will include themes that they can relate to, themes that are interesting to them, and themes related to our curriculum.

The resources selected will all be an essential part of the reading nook. Students will use the Help-Yourself Book Bins to organize books by level, genre, and theme. The Seville Classics 10-Drawer Organizer Cart will be used so that students have easy access to reading materials, reading centers, independent work, and other reading resources, right next to the reading nook. Amelia Bedelia I Can Read Box Set #1, Justice League Reading Collection, Amelia Bedelia I Can Read Box Set #2, and Paddington Collector's Quintet will be an exciting start to our reading adventure! Students will build stamina daily, as the reading nook will be one of their daily rotations during our reading block.
