My Students
My students come from all over the globe in search of the American dream of a better tomorrow. Many would never have an opportunity to academic achievement if they had remained in their home country. The neighborhood the school is situated is in a working poor community of the Bronx.
I have a lovely fully remote class in an urban elementary school in Bronx, New York, where the population of the school is 900s and class sizes are at a maximum.
My students are diverse in ethnicity and ability.
My Project
Learning online is challenging but even more so when students do not have the necessary materials. When teaching math, students are unable to calculate their equations and able to get immediate feedback from me when they try to solve the problem in their notebooks. The best you can hope for is a picture later in the day of their problem solving skills or lack of.
When students do not have magnetic white boards, dry erasers, magnetic letter tiles to use in a math, phonics or writing lessons, I am unable to give immediate feedback.
Students need these materials to solve math problems, build words, practice spelling and writing skills. At best, I hope students have the skills to take a picture and forward their work to me and then wait for feedback. Immediate feedback is more beneficial when students are engaged at the time of the lessons than later in the day when the furthest thing on the mind of a 2nd grader is a virtual lesson. My students can greatly benefit from these materials that are neither provided by the school nor affordable by families with many children.
