This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have some active students who love to play! But our days are faced with three big challenges. During our recess time we share the small playground with five other classes, we have no classroom equipment, and I need to be able to reward a challenging class with extra recess/game time.

Our school is a Title One school with the majority of our students on free or reduced lunch.

My students have limited life experiences and resources. The term "hand-me-down" is their everyday life. I try to provide a classroom of wonderful experiences everyday. This year I have a group that includes many active boys! Sports and play is a great motivator for them.

My Project

With the play equipment I have requested my students will benefit in several ways. First, we will be able to go out to the field beside our playground and have activities to engage in without competing with other classrooms and personality conflicts. (Sometimes when too many students are trying to play on the playground fights break out). Second, the equipment I chose was discussed with several of my students and the excitement was unbelievable. One student even saw the total cost and quietly said,"We can take off a few things because that's a lot of money". I told him we would try it anyway. The equipment will give me the opportunity to teach skills and games unknown to these children. Third, I would like to use these activities to promote good behavior by rewarding my students with extra game time. Boys especially are very motivated by sports!

The opportunity to provide new sports equipment and teach new sports to my children is invaluable.

Sometimes handling behavior in active boys can be a challenge. Knowing that a game is just around the corner changes attitudes. The fact that the equipment is new and just for them will make my students feel special and worth the effort. For me, they are definitely worth the effort!
