My students need clocks with mobile hands to help them master elapsed time, daily math practice books, and a subscription to Time for Kids to encourage them to KEEP READING!
Do you remember learning to tell the time? Many of my 5th and 6th grade students still struggle with time, especially learning elapsed time. I'm also requesting a subscription to Time For Kids weekly magazine so that my students are in touch with current events! High interest for many of my struggling readers!
My students are 5th and 6th graders striving to get up to grade level in a special education resource room for Reading and Math.
Most of them have transferred schools several times. We are so happy to have them with us. Despite the obstacles they face every day, we are excited because we can see their potential. Over 90% of our students are on the free/reduced lunch plan and for many students, our school is their safe haven.
My Project
Students who come to my classes face countless hurdles every day. Hurdles like poverty, behavior problems, tragic family deaths, bullying, and feeling separated from the "other kids". Finding differentiated instruction materials and grabbing their attention can be trying at times.
There are many things about my students that I still need to learn, but one thing I know they DO like and can learn with are hands-on materials like the clocks I have requested. My students struggle in Reading and Math, and so I picked a Time For Kids subscription because they are so interested in current events - this is really a high interest for them. I know it will engage them and encourage them to continue reading - and continue TRYING!
We also need some daily math practice workbooks.
I am learning from my students every day.
I know that to keep their interest, they need reality. They need to read about someone their age living across the ocean. They need to work with their hands, to share their knowledge with the classroom. They don't know it yet, but this world desperately needs something from each and every one of them. I want to try to help show them, to prove to them that against all odds, and despite their disabilities, they CAN and WILL learn. It starts today!
