Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Students are mostly English Language Learners from low income families. When the district first announced the school closure on March 13th because of the Coronavirus Pandemic, we were told it was for 2 weeks. No one expected school closure to last the whole remainder of the year. We didn't get a chance to pack up all the necessary stuff for home learning. My students are now stuck at home feeling anxious and not supported. We continue to do our learning through Zoom meetings nowadays. My students are trying to listen and learn the materials. But, they have a hard time adapting the new way of learning because a lot of my students are visual learners. They learn better when they see things rather than hear things. I need online teaching tools to meet their needs for them to be successful.

My Project

Have you seen a zoom class full of elementary students looking all frustrated and confused? Let me tell you how actual zoom classes with young kids look like. Kids are constantly twisting their bodies, some sitting on sofas with their younger siblings running around next to them, some don't even have a table to work at because they are at their grandma's house. I mean, it's rough out there. My students are eager to learn, but this virtual learning is not meant for young kids.

"THEY NEED VISUALS.

I MEAN, LOTS OF VISUALS." My second language learners need to SEE what I'm talking about.

They need physical evidence of how things work with lots of guidance in order to be successful in learning, especially when a lot of distractions are happening in their household.

It would make teaching and learning so much easier if I can show music notes and symbols in writing for their music lessons. Their comprehension can be tremendously boosted if I can tailor-draw stuff they are not getting right at the moment. Apple Pencil and iPad will be used to show things instantly on a screen for them. They will be used essentially for online learning just like how whiteboard and markers are used in classrooms.
