Online Credit Recovery: Giving Students a Second Chance

Help me give my students flexible seating options, such as bean bags. Students who are working on online credit recovery courses would benefit from a comfortable, alternative classroom environment rather than the traditional classroom setting.

My Project

This year, our school implemented an online credit recovery program for students who were credit deficient. We built time into their current schedules to come to my classroom to work on retaking courses they failed the previous year. In just two months, we have been able to expand the program and build early release, shortened week, and hybrid schedules for students who struggle with behavior and attendance as well.

In order to create a warm, welcoming environment for these students, I have made an effort to bring in alternative seating options.

The students that are in our online program have struggled in the traditional classroom setting. My goal is to create a classroom where they feel safe and comfortable. Providing them with this alternative style classroom with bean bag chairs, a saucer chair, and a carpet has brought about many benefits. It has empowered my students by giving them a choice. By providing my students with a choice in seating, their intrinsic motivation has started to increase. Alternative seating also provides comfort and allows for easy collaboration among my students. For example, it is much easier for students to work together when they are sitting on a rug or in bean bag chairs. In addition, flexible seating helps stimulate students with ADHD to help them focus and process information.

As we add more students to this online program, the need for additional alternative seating has increased. Unfortunately, my classroom stipend is not enough to cover the cost, and the school does not have any more room in the budget for alternative seating. My goal with this project is to purchase additional seating so all students in my classroom can experience enhanced choice, collaboration, comfort, and focus. I thank you for your consideration in helping me spearhead this new, alternative classroom.
