This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In an effort to foster stronger connections between home and school while promoting a love of reading, we are excited to announce our One School, One Book project! This January, every student in our school will receive their own copy of the award-winning book, The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.

Our goal is to create a shared reading experience that brings families together.

We hope that parents, guardians, and siblings will join students in reading the book each day, sparking meaningful conversations and a collective appreciation for literature.

To make this initiative even more engaging, our hope is that each homeroom class will receive a stuffed gorilla—representing Ivan, the heartwarming main character of the story. These gorillas will serve as a fun and tangible motivator for students to dive into the story, as well as a reminder of the power of compassion and friendship, which are central themes in the book.

As we kick off this school-wide project, there will be opportunities for families to participate in related activities, discussions, and events. Together, we’ll explore the world of The One and Only Ivan and celebrate the joy of reading as a community.

We can’t wait to see our families come together for this exciting adventure!
