My Project

Our school community is a diverse community of multilingual learners that come together as one. Each year, One Book features one book for adults, one for teens, one for kids and one for Spanish language readers. This year the kids book selection is Barrio Rising: The Protest that Built Chicano Park. The purpose of One Book is to bring our community closer together through the shared experience of reading and discussing the same book. By helping all of our teachers get resources to support all students including immigrant students, we can help these learners thrive in their new educational environment. Books help break down barriers and create community to welcome newcomers into our school as they learn a new language.

This year, our school would like to unite our readers through the book Barrio Rising to appreciate and celebrate our diverse community of bilingual learners and learn more about the historical fiction account of the community activism not far from our own community.

This book is a vivid account behind Chicano Park—home to the largest outdoor mural collection in the U.S.—and just one example of the Mexican American community’s rich history of resistance and resilience.

Multiple copies of the book Barrio Rising will connect our classrooms through a shared reading experiences which celebrates diversity and the many language learners that make our community diverse and unique. One School, One Book!
