My students need Boardmaker Studio, which is a picture/visual based software program that allows for both print and interactive activities.

My Students

Imagine being non-verbal and having limited knowledge of sign language. Many of my students face this challenge each day and are unable to express their wants and needs because there is a gap in their communication abilities.

I have ten Autism and TMH students, ages nine to twelve.

They are in fourth through sixth grade. Our school is high poverty and cannot afford to purchase enhancement supplies. All of my students receive free lunch at school. My students attend a public elementary school in Illinois. The area is considered high poverty, and our school does not have available funds to help enhance our curriculum. The students face various and extensive challenges throughout the day and range in disabilities including behavioral, learning, and emotional.

My Project

Students with Autism and TMH are sometimes unable to communicate their wants/needs verbally. They become frustrated and shut down from wanting to learn anything new. Board Maker software closes the gap between verbal and non verbal communication by using pictures in print and interactive activities. We currently have an older version of Board Maker software, but this particular program is more enhanced and would allow for many of my fellow special education teachers in other classrooms to share the program with me to help their students as well.

Every student has the ability to learn, just not on the same day, or the same way.
