My Students

Who better to teach a Creative Writing class than Stephen King? Well, he happens to be busy writing stories right now, so I am attempting to fill in his incredibly large shoes. I need some help!

I teach in a diverse high school in upstate New York.

We have a high poverty rate. I have a great group of students this year, but not all of them love to read and write. This year, I am teaching a Creative Writing class for juniors and seniors. These students have the desire to write, but do not quite know what makes good writing. I want to expose them to a variety of good writing. Studies show that good readers make good writers.

My Project

In using Stephen King's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, I hope to show students good writing and use Stephen King's experience to teach my students how to write well. They will be able to experience his childhood and journey to be a fabulous writer. They will see where his inspirations came from. I want them to learn that inspiration comes from everywhere. I want them to know that they need to write and re-write many drafts before coming to a polished piece. I want them to see that it is OK to fail as long as they keep trying. If Stephen King can do it, they can too. This memoir will also help me implement the Common Core State Standards by injecting non-fiction into my lessons. This memoir lends itself perfectly to the standards.

Kids learn best when material is relevant as well as rigorous.

Stephen King's material is both of these and so much more. Stephen King is a household name. Students admire and respect his work, whether it be his novellas, novels, or TV shows and movies based on his books. Kids love Stephen King! Please help me to inspire these young minds to be better readers and writers. Who knows? Maybe one of my students will be the next Stephen King!
