Urban students often are overlooked and mine are no exception! This is the first time these students are going to receive their own music class and we are in need of so many things. From supplies to models to everything in between, we want to find anything that can help us achieve this goal of learning and making music!
One thing I have found that is consistent with children regardless of where they live or their social status is that they want to learn new things and they always love doing things in music.
Enthusiastic, boisterous, curious, wondering, are all traits I would use to describe these students. I want to nurture those qualities because these are our future scientists and tomorrow's citizens who are our world changes and our stewards of the future. I want to put the tools in their hands they need to be successful at their jobs, becoming responsible citizens who understand what they need to do to ensure tomorrow has a chance to succeed.
My Project
My inner city children are so excited to have music as an option. We have not had any for many years. We need everything! Supplies, instruments, theory, stands, you name it, we need it!
Music is a universal language and speaks the same no matter where it plays and it is important to the education of these students.
Learning these skills will help them to focus in their academic core classes, excel in math and science and learn how to put things together in a logical manner. It also helps them to burn off that extra energy they have fro having no outside recess time.
These basic instruments and activities will help them to work together as a group to achieve a concert for family and friends. I found a set of boomwhackers but need mallets and the carry case so they can be played. I will need to develop curricula so the lessons meet standards. The octavator caps make the boomwhackers drop an octave so we can add more variety to the music we play. I can only do so much with pencils and rhythm beats! Having one xylophone will help us add so many different opportunities. This type of xylophone will allow us to add different instruments and present a concert with different age groups. we can add recorders, rhythm, voices and many other styles for a well-rounded beginning program!
