Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm a school library media specialist and CS4all cluster serving the whole school community, from Pre-K to 5th grade.
Our students are from all over the world bringing diverse cultures and 12 languages to our community.
We are a Title I school with 32% English Language Learners and 21% special needs students.
Our students are excited to learn and understand the world they live in. They are instantly engaged with computer science concepts, but many have their first experience with laptop or desktop computers in the classroom.
My Project
This year our students have the opportunity to use one to one technology. These are small Lenovo Thinkpad laptops, and for many of our students, it is the first laptop computer experience they've ever had. They use these laptops to access Scratch.mit.edu and apply computer science concepts to their coding activities.
The Touchpad usability on these laptops presents frustration and gets in the way of student access to content.
Although learning how to operate a touchpad is useful, many of our younger students lack the dexterity or fine motor skills to master it in enough time to practice coding. This disrupts instruction.
Please help give our students the comfort and confidence to easily interact with technology. These are our future programmers and they are excited to learn about code.
