My Students
Our school is an an urban high school in the age of budget cuts and standardized testing. More variety of interesting, authentic reading is as essential as always, but our students greatly benefit from every advantage.
Like many teens, our students can act as though reading and writing are odious chores, but like all people, they do find good stories compelling.
Franklin's life was full of interesting adventures we can all enjoy if we have the chance. His writing serves as a great model of prose as well.
My Project
I am requesting 49 copies of "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin." They do have large and heavy textbooks, but these contain few complete works of extended reading. The Dover Thrift editions are light and cheap, but the texts are complete and include vocabulary footnotes. Having more portable editions of texts allows students to read more effectively at home than when they must pack and carry textbooks weighing up to ten pounds each. These books are specifically for AP English Language students. All of us today find reading intellectual prose from the 1700's challenging, and the College Board knows this, so the exam usually includes some reading from centuries past. Franklin's style makes a great introduction.
Each year, I try to buy one set of books to read with the students and then let them keep.
Sometimes, with sales and discounts, I'm able to get a set of Dover Thrift editions for the students at one dollar each or even less. This title is more expensive, but I've been wanting to read it with students for some time. Thanks for your help!
