One in a Minion: Manipulatives for Diverse Math Minions!
My students need math manipulatives (magnetic coins, place value blocks, talking clocks) to increase their passion for math and to make math come alive!
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Francolino's classroom raised $478
This project is fully funded
Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than you!"~Dr. Seuss.
I hope my students become true global citizens. The first step to celebrating others, is celebrating ourselves. Thus my students embrace their individuality so they realize their endless potential!
My K-3 Special Education classroom spans four grade levels and is full of unique minds!
They come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, many are learning English as a second language and all have been labeled with a disability. My students, however, do not view their disability as a limit to their potential. They can learn, they just learn differently. My students astound and inspire me with their curious minds, their inquisitive spirit, and their eagerness to teach others.
Here are some things you might see or hear in our classroom: debates on which strategy to use to solve an addition problem, requests to stay in math class during recess, examples of when they used math at home with their family, bragging to their Mom or Dad about their most recent math quiz, a high five when a peer gets a question right, a power clap when the whole class is busy engaging in higher level thinking skills, and the glow in a kid's eye when they get to lead a number talk.
My Project
These materials will allow math to come alive for my students! My kids have proved to me that they have the ability to meet and exceed grade level expectations for math. They are in the Special Education setting, not because they cannot learn, but because they learn differently.
The materials in this project will complement and meet the diverse needs of my students. My students are visual and tactile learners and learn best when empowered to use manipulatives independently and with groups to work hands-on with math and apply it to their lives. These materials will allow students to directly engage with place value, time, money and addition fluency in a way that celebrates their ability to learn and complements their unique learning styles.
Students learn best when they have an opportunity to inquire, discover and explore.
Students excel when they engage and are motivated to ask questions and seek answers. Students thrive when they work in collaborative groups. This project allows for all of that! It provides meaningful hands-on resources (magnetic coins, place value blocks, talking clocks), that inspire kids to get excited about and, more importantly, learn math! It's math that gives my students the most hope, for it is the one realm of life in which every problem has a solution!
