This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been blessed with the opportunity to loop with some of my students this year. I can say this group of students has a huge passion for learning, especially in math and was very active in their learning process with frequent self reflections and goal setting activities. This particular group of students has encountered one of most stressful and difficult school years of all time. They have shown resilience, determination and flexibility during such changing times.
My Project
As we tackle difficult conversations about race and equity in this upcoming school year, I want my students to have books as a resource where they see mirrors of themselves in the characters portrayed in these stories. Not only characters, but experiences that students can relate to, are so important when making text to self and text to world connections. Through the purchase of these books, my students will be able to feel empowered to talk about racial and social issues currently happening in our communities. These books will provide them with role models and images of pioneers that will hopefully motivate them to makes changes in such divided times. The use of the books will open up so many touching and difficult conversations. They will allow students to feel comfortable talking about racial encounters and reflect on how to be a transformation leader in their own communities.
