Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 10th grade English at a school where 100% of the students receive free lunch. This is a very special international studies public charter school, which is a school of choice for these students. Every student who graduates from our school will have met the A-G requirements to enter a UC or CSU school. For many of these students, they will be the first generation in their families to attend college.
As a college prep writing teacher, I assign a lot of writing assignments. Because I am a firm believer in process writing, there are several drafts of each assignment. This means a lot of paper!
Our students are incredibly environmentally minded. They even created a club on campus just to raise awareness of environmental issues. With their desire to recycle, reuse, and reduce, both the students and I have noticed that the amount of paper required for all the writing in my class seems quite wasteful.
In addition, the paper being wasted is usually mine. Teaching in a high poverty area has its challenges. Although many of the students do have computers at home, most do not have access to a printer. Even the ones that do have printers at home often run out of paper and ink, and so they are always bringing me flash drives to print their papers.
To eliminate some of the paper waste, I have started just uploading files and having students email assignments to me, but the only computer in class is the school issued laptop I use. Because it is connected to the school network (with grades and attendance), the students are not allowed access to this computer.
If I had a classroom desktop that was constantly open for student access, then students could regularly bring their assignments in on flash drive and upload them to a specific folder on the desktop. At the end of the day, I would move the folder to my flash drive to take the assignments home to grade.
Having this computer in class would not only create a paperless and thus greener classroom, it would also allow students without computers at home to use my computer during breaks, study hall, and after school to type papers and use the Internet for school assignments. The impact would be huge!
Even better, using a digital paper collection system would make my load each night literally lighter, as 125 essays can actually be quite heavy to tote home.
Your help will not only open up greater access to computers for my students, it will also help to eliminate unnecessary paper waste and save trees. My green-minded students will be incredibly excited, and my classroom will be a more efficient learning atmosphere.
