One Class Making a Difference for Those Experiencing Homelessness

My Project

During English Language Arts, we have been researching how one person can make a difference in their community, nation, or world. We have learned about how students have made a difference. After researching the needs of our community, the students discussed and decided they wanted to help those experiencing homelessness. The students care about others, and it shows in the ideas they generate for ways to help.

Students will be writing notes and creating pictures to attach to knitted hats and blankets purchased for a shelter in the community.

A staff member from a shelter in the community spoke with students about the causes of homelessness for families and the increased needs. We read articles about how homelessness is affecting the community. The students discussed and decided to provide blankets and knit hats or head wraps to donate so that every student would donate at least one item along with a note or picture.

The students collaborated to analyze how they wanted to help and created a budget for items they wanted to purchase. This project will support others outside the school community, and the students will learn that a class can make a difference. They will develop their social-emotional skills through this project.
