Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at what is called a school of choice. We provide an alternative to the traditional high school setting. We cater to students whose circumstances require flexible hours, personalized instruction, immense emotional support, and a small-campus setting that allows us to meet them exactly where they are.
Our students realize the importance of graduation and they come to us with that goal in mind.
They are a diverse group of learners, and each brings a unique set of talents and circumstances.
My Project
We would like to offer all of our students, all of our teachers, and every employee in the building the opportunity to participate in a campus-wide book club. What better way to build community than by coming together to read, think, and talk about an engaging book that challenges us and makes us think deeply about topics we care about?
Creating a school community is essential to helping students feel safe, seen, heard, and loved.
This campus-wide book study will help us do just that. Just Mercy is a true story about the Equal Justice Initiative. These additional books will be used to continue the discussion. Having an entire campus discussing the concept of speaking up in the face of injustice sounds like a powerful way to leave the world a better place than we found it.
