My Project
My students are capable of so much and they deserve opportunities that reflect their potential, not their circumstances. That’s why I’m seeking to bring the novel "Refugee", by Alan Gratz into our classroom for a full-class novel study. This powerful book, which follows the stories of three young refugees from different times and places, offers a unique lens into empathy, perseverance, and global awareness, all themes that deeply connect with the lives and challenges of my students.
By placing "Refugee" into their hands, I’m not just offering them a book; I’m giving them a mirror to see themselves in stories of courage and a window to understand others.
This novel study will engage them meaningfully, build literacy skills, spark thoughtful discussion, and most importantly, nurture a lifelong love of reading.
What I love most about my students is their incredible resilience. Many of them come from low-income households and face challenges far beyond what most middle schoolers should ever have to carry. Yet, every day, they walk into the classroom with curiosity, determination, and a willingness to learn. Their strength inspires me, because despite the odds, they keep showing up, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, ready to grow.
Reading can be a bridge to connection, to confidence, and to future success. With your help, I can provide my students not just a story to read, but an experience that matters.
