My Students

Every day students look through my classroom library looking for engaging books to dive into. We are in need of chapter books and informational texts that are interesting and fun to read.

My students are the best...hands down!

They come to school eager to learn with many stories to tell in first grade. Our school has 49% of the student body receiving free or reduced lunch. We are also an inclusion model school, meaning our special education students and our bilingual students are mainstreamed into our classrooms. We are a public school in Washington State.

My Project

During our independent reading time students will get access to chapter books and informational texts that are at their just right level. Giving students access to engaging leveled books allows them to stay focused on their reading in meaningful ways. With the implementation of the Common Core State Standards it is imperative that students have access to leveled texts throughout the school year. Student engagement during independent reading is currently a struggle for my students. With these materials students will have the proper books that will not only be at their just right level but will also keep them engaged.

In order to put my students on a path to become life-long readers, and to aid them in becoming on-level readers, it is essential that they have just as much access to new, high-interest titles as any other child.

Books can transport kids and will help them see life beyond their neighborhood.
