Once Upon a Time--Literacy Through Music

My students need instruments, puppets, CD's, and hardback books for storytelling during music time.

My Students

I teach General Music to Kindergarten and first grade students. I am constantly finding new and exciting ways to integrate the arts and academics, particularly reading and math skills into the music classroom.

Our students are high-need with a large percentage of special education, free and reduced lunch students and minorities.

Over a third of the parents in our school district do not have a high school diploma. Our rural community is in an economically depressed area with high unemployment. Our classroom funding was dramatically cut this year by the state legislature, so purchasing instruments or other supplies is nearly impossible. We were fortunate just to be able to maintain arts instruction for our students. Enrichment through Donor's Choose would vastly enrich and improve my students opportunities.

My Project

The need for my students is for instruments, storytelling puppets and Cd's. As the children follow along during the musical story, they develop listening comprehension, fluency and other skills needed for independent reading. Most importantly, the children are giving the opportunity to use their imagination, sing, move, perform and HAVE FUN!

With the help of Donors Choose, my students will enjoy music and reading on a deeper level.
