My Project
I love introducing my students to the world of fairy tales! Many young children aren't familiar with them anymore. It is a great starting point for STEAM activities, too. We also go through a unit of study on economics that we use throughout the year across subject areas. I would like to use a marketplace-type setting to reinforce these concepts through earned rewards. Concepts concerning budgeting, using limited resources, opportunity costs and needs versus wants will be considered. Students will purchase rewards based on credits earned from showing a strong work ethic in class. These credits can be redeemed in our marketplace for needed items or wants such as building STEAM fairy tale solutions.
My students will use the Fairy Tales Problem Solving STEM Kits to make predictions and test them, and to expand their learning of the engineering design process.
These tales allow my students to collaborate with classmates in building bridges, chairs, wagons, fences and houses that are stable and that go along with the stories. The hands-on aspect is always good for early learners to recall components of the story and practice STEM designs.
