Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been a first-grade teacher in a city school in Illinois for over fifteen years. My students live in low-income households from a beautifully diverse area of Chicago. Hispanic, African-American, and Arab families send their children to our school.
My classroom is filled with students who are alive with curiosity.
I embrace this energy by using a workshop model during reading and math. The students work with partners, work independently on concepts at their level, use technology, and work with me in small groups. One of the most gratifying aspects of this method is watching the students take ownership of their learning and become confident students at such a young age.
My Project
Math should be relate-able, engaging, and boundless. I want my students to see beyond worksheets and math fact practice. In my first grade classroom, we discuss how we see numbers, how we can be problem solvers, and above all, how math "happens" all the time.
I am requesting math read aloud books that can help launch these rich discussions.
The books I have selected are about addition, subtraction, measurement, counting, graphing and fractions. Not only will I read the books aloud to my students, they will also be accessible to the students in Math Workshop. The children can use math tools to act out the situations in the text, draw and respond to the ideas, and share their extensions with partners.
