This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new," said Brian Tracy. My students will be growing because we will be taking them out of their comfort zone on a camping and hiking trip for 5 days.
I teach at a charter school where my students attend school from 7:15 - 5 pm.
My school is Title One and in the 6th grade, we have about 90% of students on free or reduced lunch. Most of my students have never been out of Houston let alone out of Texas. This end of year trip will expand their horizons by allowing them to travel to Carlsbad, New Mexico and Salt Flat, Texas. In addition to exposing them to new experiences, students will be able to apply the learning they have done in their classrooms. They will have to use ratios to create a meal for 12 people from a recipe for 4. They will use their knowledge of geology to differentiate between the rocks they see during their hike. They will use their reflection skills to create a notebook that will document their trip.
My Project
At KIPP, one of our missions is for our students to "climb the mountain to college." We hope to simulate that climb by hiking up the Guadalupe Peak Trail on the last day of our end of year trip. The trail is very steep and is rated as strenuous with 3,000 feet of elevation gain. By hiking this trail, our students will realize that the road to college is hard and at sometimes they may want to stop, but with the support of family, friends and teachers they will be able to make it to the top. And when they make it to the top, they will see a view that is outstanding and rewarding. After the hike, we would like to thank our students for not giving up by rewarding them with a hotel room stay at the end of the day. Students will be earning the opportunity to stay in a hotel through their hard work. Please help us make it possible to show our students that through hard work you do get little rewards along the way.
At KIPP, we believe that our students not only accomplish learning inside the classroom but also outside.
Therefore, for the 6th grade end of year trip, we are taking our students to Carlsbad, NM and Salt Flat, TX to experience hiking and camping. They will be apply the knowledge that they learned in their classrooms to camp and hike. At the end, after they have climbed their hike up to the tallest peak in Texas, we would like to be able to reward them with a hotel stay that they will remember.
