This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The statistics are scary. High schools across the country are graduating seniors who are NOT ready for college. According to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, only 24% of seniors in 2010 met college-ready benchmarks in all subject areas. This fact alone scares me into action every day.

I teach in a low income, high risk community at a high school in the south Bronx that offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program to otherwise underprivileged students.

We are incredibly dedicated to getting our students ready for college, but our current technology sets us back. We have computers and printers in nearly every classroom, but it is rare for both to work at the same time. We have a laptop cart, but it is rare for the laptops to start up and connect to the Internet in less than twenty minutes. Nonetheless our students are equally dedicated to getting ready for college as their teachers. I am currently working with our senior class. With limited technology, I try my best to guide an average class of 32 students through the college admissions process. Most of my students do not have access to technology at home, so our time together in a live classroom is invaluable.

My Project

With a fully functioning laptop cart, my students will be able to get ready for college and for the real world that looms ahead. My students will be able to work independently on college applications, scholarships, financial aid forms, etc. in a live classroom. My students will be able to access our Edmodo and Wallwisher discussion boards in a live classroom. My students will be able to work collaboratively on documents and projects via Google Drive in a live classroom. The learning opportunities are endless. With better, faster technology, my students will acquire both the content knowledge and skill sets necessary to succeed in college.

Your donation will help get my students college-ready and beyond!

I have never worked with a group of students that is more dedicated to and motivated by their learning than the Class of 2013. I am so excited for this opportunity and for my students to go off to college college-ready.
