My fifth graders live in an urban neighborhood. Nearly half of them are new English learners. Many have little opportunity to read and discuss current events going on in our city, let alone in the world. Do they watch the news at home? Probably not. Does someone in their home subscribe to a daily newspaper? Probably not.
To get students interested in what's going on around the world, they must see information that is critical to decisions and discoveries being made daily. Providing current informational materials could open up students' little worlds. This could make an incredible difference in their lives and dreams!
If I can offer an assortment of age appropriate current event selections, I guarantee by the end of the year, I will have students who have more awareness of what's going on in our world. It is "music to my ears" to have someone come up to me and say, "I saw it on the news." To hear, "Did you know about...?" makes my heart swell with joy!
Helping to fund this project would ensure that my students have the chance to look beyond their own neighborhood. They will be able to learn, think and talk about what it is like elsewhere. Giving them the tools to think and wonder would cause YOU to earn your wings as our ANGEL! We would be ever so grateful.
