This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are interested in the world around them. They are city kids with a keen interest in learning new things. They love to explore, write, build and read. As the ELD teacher for kindergarten and first grade, I spend my time pushing into classrooms to teach English language learners. We are about to go 100% in person and it's going to be tight quarters in our small classrooms.
My students come from impoverished backgrounds, but they also have strong family ties and parents who want the best for them.
Our school is very large and with the latest state budget cuts, our class will be much larger than normal. This won't stop us from becoming a school family looking out for each other and learning everything we can in these first pivotal years of school.
My Project
This kit to teach phonemic awareness is what I need to fill gaps for students who are struggling to learn to read after the pandemic. With last year's gap in learning, we have to make sure our kids can hear the sounds in words before they can read or write them. This program includes hand motions, videos, and chants to learn and practice hearing the sounds in words. Before phonics can be effective, a student needs to be about to manipulate the sounds in the words. Reading just makes more sense when you break it down.
Heggarty allows us to break the skills down and practice them daily while only taking up about 10 minutes a day.
Our multilingual students sometimes have trouble hearing the sounds in their second language. This concentrated daily practice is so important as a skill builder.
More than half of students from low‑income households
