This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work at an amazing urban alternative charter school where I serve as the Culture and Climate Coordinator. In this role, I mentor at-risk youth who are working toward a second chance at earning their high school diploma. At our school, we are deeply committed to not only supporting students academically, but also helping them transition into the workforce and stay engaged in their communities. A major part of my role involves working closely with some of our most resilient, yet vulnerable students who often face complex challenges.

My office and classroom space serve as a vital hub for these students.

It’s where I conduct one-on-one sessions, meditations, and parent meetings. It’s also a space where students can take a break, express themselves, regroup, and reset when needed. The environment plays a big role in their ability to open up and move forward.

That’s why it’s essential for this space to feel safe, therapeutic, and inviting. Creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere with this comfortable sofa can make all the difference in building trust and supporting emotional regulation. A space like this not only facilitates growth—it helps students feel seen, heard, and ready to take on the next step in their journey.
