My Students
My students attend a tough, inner city school where 98% of the population receives free lunch and 75% of their families receive AFDC assistance. The wealth of my school lies in our school community. We have fostered an environment where we play, sing and dance together as we learn. The students and staff of my school invest themselves in creativity and this type of learning has fostered significant trust. Because of this trust, my students are ready to confidently serve their community through performance.
My Project
After students at my school learn a variety of jazz standards and folk music using the Real Book, Rockin', Poppin' Mallets and One Fine Day, they will plan a field trip to a community nursing home and children's hospital to perform for the residents. The backing tracks, power strip and speakers will enable the students to take their performance 'on the road' to serve these community members who are home-bound and/or hospital-bound.
By taking their performance on the road to serve the community where they live, my students will experience a valuable service-learning lesson.
They will learn firsthand the feeling of giving back to others through something they love...performance.
