My Students
I work in a setting that is completely devoted to working with students with special needs. I am a 6:1:1, middle school, special education teacher primarily working with students with autism and intellectual disabilities. Most of my students are non-verbal. They are so remarkable though! I admire that they come to school ready to work. They are truly my reason for coming to work. They amaze me everyday. I have made it my mission as an educator, to focus on my students' abilities. After all, Dr. Temple Grandin affirms that "the world needs all kinds of minds.”
My Project
I am elated to teach my students the necessary skills needed to obtain employment in the area of food preparation. My students have demonstrated tremendous progress in preparing food for themselves to eat. For that reason, we opened The Corner 6 Cafe. At The Corner 6 Cafe. we sell assorted snacks and beverages which helps my students learn various skills needed to work in a store.
This project will provide my students with autism, a needed refrigerator to operate the school cafe effectively.
This school cafe will increase their food preparation and money skills. Additionally, the school cafe will promote social interactions and teach them other skills like cleaning, stocking shelves and taking inventory.
As a special educator, it is my mission to promote student independence. The unemployment rate for individuals with autism is absolutely staggering. Statistics show that approximately eighty-five percent of adults with autism are unemployed in comparison to the national unemployment rate being four point five percent.
With the implementation of a school cafe, my students will learn the essential skills needed for employment at a store.
