Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
MHS is a diverse community of 2800 students on the east side of Dallas, Texas. Ninety percent of my students are African American or Hispanic, and 78% of them receive free or reduced-price lunch.
A few years ago, one of my students said, "Miss, reading is for white people" as I was trying to convince him to check out a book from the library.
These words left me utterly "shook" (as my kids like to say). Rather than dismiss his comment, I leaned in and listened. These hard conversations prompted me on a personal journey to learn more about how bias, racism, and privilege shape our perceptions, and how educators unknowingly carry this baggage into our classrooms. All of this lead to the start of a book club for reluctant readers. We are in the fifth year of this book club, and I have watched the most reluctant students become voracious readers by reading books like ALL AMERICAN BOYS, EVERYTHING EVERYTHING, THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR, and THE HATE U GIVE. The key to igniting that spark for reading is giving kids books that mirror their own lives.
My Project
The Skeeter Nation Book Club went to see The Hate U Give in October, and then we took a break from reading the same book to focus on self-selected reading. Some students enjoyed books on their own, but many of them miss the community aspect of our Book Club and have been asking, "Miss, when are we starting Book Club again?" We will combine the two book clubs from the fall and spring of last year and add a few new members for a total of fifty students reading together!
The release of Angie Thomas' second book, On the Come Up, is a perfect opportunity to reconvene, read a great book together, and have insightful discussions.
