My Students
“Let be real: We're black kids from one of the worst neighborhoods in the city. All it takes is one of us messing up, and suddenly all of us messed up.” -- Angie Thomas, On the Come Up
Thomas's line from her YA novel sadly speaks some truth about my students and how they are perceived in the world.
But they are more than the stereotype. They are smart, funny, wise, insightful -- and they love reading.
My Project
For this project, I am requesting copies of Angie Thomas's YA novel, On the Come Up, to read in my junior English classes. The novel centers around a female protagonist, Bri, who fights for her dreams and struggles to find out her true self in an often unfair world. The novel also uses hip hop to help tell Bri's story, an art form that resonates with my students. We will read On the Come Up in our English class as a companion text for our unit on Shakespeare's play, Macbeth. Both texts center around the idea of ambition and fighting for what you want. By having a companion text, students will be able to make deeper connections and find new ways into understanding Shakespeare.
With your help, we can enable students to see themselves in the literature they read, while making connections to classical texts.
