This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my school are very diverse. I have students who have grown up all over the country, and I have other students who have never left our state. Students speak multiple languages at home, and some students are still learning English.
One thing all of my students have in common is that their high school diploma will open doors to the future, doors that may not have been available to their parents and grandparents.
All of our students will complete four years of math prior to graduation.
Our students are kind citizens. Instead of a senior prank, our senior class participates in 'Prank it Forward,' where they pay it forward and raise money for a community member in need. Whether it's a fellow classmate battling cancer, an elementary school student with an undiagnosed medical ailment, or a family who has experienced a tragedy, our students believe in kindness and inclusion. These are the role models that my freshmen look up to, and as they get their turn as seniors, those are the shoes they have to fill.
My Project
At the high school level, students learn a variety of math - Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Statistics, and all sorts of applications for each content area. DeltaMath Plus will be used by all high school students, grades 9 - 12.
Students' math needs are as unique and diverse as the courses offered.
Students do not learn at the same pace, nor do they need the same amount of practice on each concept. Students may need weekly practice on a specific skill for their IEP goal, and other students might just need consistent spiral review to maintain skills.
DeltaMath Plus allows our teachers to use this as one of many forms of practice within our classrooms. Students continue to practice a skill until mastery is achieved. Immediate feedback is given after every problem - a worked out solution, a video showing the concept, and the correct answer. This allows students to be more independent learners, as they can compare their solution to the worked out solution and often find their own mistake before calling a teacher over to help.
We have seen students make some great connections and observations when they need to compare their work to the correct answer, and it has helped students use proper math notation and vocabulary as well because they are seeing the complete, worked out solution for each problem.
As our school moves to 1:1 technology next year, the math department plans to be very intentional in what/how we are using technology in the classroom. Having DeltaMath in a 1:1 classroom would allow for students to spend 5 - 10 minutes per day practicing current skills and reviewing old skills in a structured environment that allows for immediate feedback.
