Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As adults, we are aware of the benefits of healthy eating and this misconceptions of the food industry. My young students are only beginning to understand that healthy eating options are in the first steps in taking control over their food intake.

My students are located in the cultural center of the world, in which they witness both extreme wealth and poverty.

Many have financial hardships and often live with an extended family. They receive free breakfast and lunch in school, so many of their meals are prepared and therefore, processed for them. They are extremely curious about the world and ask many questions, many have asked about eating healthy and some are interested in a vegetarian diet. Their curiosity inspired a new unit in Health class around the food industry and the concept of food justice. As they become aware of the injustices that they themselves are victims, they eagerly begin to want make a change. Educating youngsters is the first step in social change and I want to encourage their passions.

My Project

This donation of a class set of "Omnivore's Dilemma" will make a difference in our Health Class' approach to investigating the food industry. As we all know, education is the first step in empowering our youngsters to make choices that can better their over all well-being and how they see their place in the world. Teenagers are highly influenced and passionate about their world. I have witnessed many take newly acquired knowledge and begin small steps in changing their behaviors. Many report back about conversations at home and I believe that this book will add to these learning moments and benefit not only my students, but their families as well.

This project is important because this book is a solid resource that examines the food industry and will provide and inspire many conversations that effect my population of students.

The more they are educated, the more empowered they are to begin making choices that will allow for healthier lifestyles and more balanced well-being
